Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has an avenue named after him in the city of Hialeah, in South Florida, in addition to another one that Miami-Dade County designated in the southwest of this demarcation.

The naming of the road artery is the result of resolutions approved by the Hialeah Mayor’s Office and Miami-Dade County, where this majority-Hispanic city is located, to honor “the work and influence that Álvaro Uribe Vélez has had in Latin American politics.”

“He is the best president of the Americas in the last hundred years,” said Hialeah Mayor Carlos Hernandez during the presentation ceremony of the stretch with the new name, held on Friday, where he highlighted the struggle of former President Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010) against dictatorships and communism in the region.

The event was attended by Francisco Santos, vice president of Colombia during the government of the honoree, who recalled that the former president was “the first man who called the late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez for what he really was (dictator)”, as reported by Univision 23 Miami.

He said that Uribe coined the term “Castro-Chavismo” and that he is “the man who has fought against that populist left that kills democracy, that kills the economy and has the richest country in Latin America totally destroyed”.

The former president was part, via teleconference from Colombia, of the launching of the “President Álvaro Uribe Velez Way”, which is located on West 16th Avenue, in the stretch between 44th and 60th Streets.

Álvaro Uribe thanked the South Florida city for the gesture, although he said he has never been given to accepting this type of recognition “because of the controversy it generates.

After some delays, the county commissioners finally approved the designation of “Álvaro Uribe Way” for Southwest 117th Avenue, between 24th and 40th Streets.
