A new caravan of Honduran migrants, many of them minors, began to form on Monday in Honduras, from where they expect to leave tomorrow for the United States.

About a hundred Hondurans, children, women and men, have arrived today at the Gran Central Metropolitana, the main bus terminal in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, where they expect more people to join the caravan.

“We still don’t know if we will go through Corinto or Agua Caliente,” both border points with Guatemala, said a Honduran citizen to local media one of the Hondurans who intends to reach the United States, along with his wife and a brother.

The source, who did not want to give his name, said he is leaving the country because “there is no health, education or opportunities to survive”.

“The economic situation is difficult, I have been looking for work for more than six months and I can’t find anything, the basic food basket is expensive,” he said.

He also pointed out that the departure of the caravan is scheduled for 05:00 local time (11:00 GMT).

The call for the new caravan, a modality that began in October 2018 in San Pedro Sula, has been disseminated, as on other occasions, on social networks, but so far it is not known who or who the organizers are.

The Government of Guatemala announced today a state of prevention in five of the 22 departments of the country to contain the possible arrival of the caravan of Honduran migrants.

The Guatemalan president, Alejandro Giammattei, together with his vice president, Guillermo Castillo, and the council of state ministers, signed government decree 3-2021 which orders a state of prevention in view of the “risk of displacement of groups of people with migrant characteristics.”

The undocumented migrants “will cross the country’s borders to the departments of Izabal (northeast), Zacapa, Chiquimula and El Progreso (east) and Petén (north)” without complying with “the legal requirements demanded by the migratory authorities, nor with the sanitary measures” related to COVID-19, states the decree.

The arrival of the expected migratory caravan “would generate a citizen security crisis upon its entry into the country or circulation within it, aggravating the related epidemiological sanitary emergency”, specified the regulation, which will be published on Tuesday in official media.

According to the government, the migrant caravan and the pandemic could endanger “the population and authorities of Guatemala, including the migrants themselves, who must also be protected.”
