14 House Republicans asked the FBI for all the information they have on the alleged relationship between Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) had with a Chinese spy.
A Fox News article revealed that the group of Republican representatives sent a letter addressed to FBI Director Christopher Wray:
“As our nation faces a growing security threat due to Chinese Communist Party (CCP) attempts to infiltrate and undermine the U.S. government, we request a full briefing on counterintelligence threats to members of Congress, including information related to Rep. Eric Swalwell and his ties to an alleged Chinese intelligence operative,” the 14 House Republican members wrote.
The lawmakers have expressed concern that Swalwell sits on the House Committee on Homeland Security, where he has access to classified information that may have been breached.
This is not the first time a group of Republicans has demanded more information related to what became a “sexpionage” scandal. In December of last year, they called for Swalwell to be “immediately removed” from the Committee and alleged that the Democrat concealed ties to Chinese agent Christine Fang for five years.
What is the sexpionage scandal?
Fang used campaign fundraising, networking, rallies and romantic relationships with at least two Midwest mayors to get close to political power; and it was further confirmed that the Chinese spy helped fundraise for Swalwell’s 2014 campaign.
“Federal investigators, who began investigating Fang based on what they considered her suspicious behavior, informed Swalwell of their concerns about her in 2015. At that point, Swalwell, who has not been charged with any crime, cut off all contact with Fang,”Axios revealed.
Fang, who is now a fugitive from U.S. law enforcement, worked under the direction of China’s top-secret Ministry of State Security spy agency.
The spy appeared on the feds’ radar during surveillance of another alleged Chinese agent working as a diplomat at the San Francisco Consulate, a U.S. counterintelligence official said.
The scandal came days after U.S. intelligence officials warned that China had become the country’s top security threat.
“As Director of National Intelligence (…) If I could communicate one thing to the American people from this unique vantage point, it is that the People’s Republic of China represents the greatest threat to the United States today, and the greatest threat to democracy and freedom around the world since World War II,” said John Ratcliffe, then Director of National Intelligence in Wall Street Journal article.
