Idiot of the Week: Major League Baseball

Idiota de la semana, El American

Leer en Español

Major League Baseball (MLB) wins El American’s Idiot of the Week trophy after its decision last Friday to drop the glove to get political and use the bat to take a swing at the Republican Party.

Last week, MLB decided to move the All-Star Game that was to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, to Denver, Colorado. The reason? Protesting Georgia’s election law reform.

The state of Georgia approved a reform of the electoral law in which different measures are taken in order to guarantee fairer elections and less susceptible to electoral fraud.

The Democratic Party and its entire media orbit have launched a campaign to make people believe that these measures are some kind of attack against democracy and, of course, they have resorted to their favorite mantra: that it especially harms oppressed minorities.

The MLB has joined this campaign of disinformation and lies on the part of the Democratic Party and, for example, considers it unfair and terrifying to require an identity document in order to be able to vote. They have their reasons for being so afraid of this measure.

We do not rule out that the MLB has not even read the new law, and perhaps they have not even read their own website, as they throw their hands up in the air for asking voters for an identity document, while their website specifies that in the sale of tickets with customer pick-up at the box office, they must show a photo ID.

Apparently, for MLB, preventing ticket fraud at its games is much more important and necessary than preventing voter fraud.

The funniest thing -although it’s not really funny at all- is that they claim that this kind of measure especially harms the black population. Do MLB and the Democratic Party consider that blacks have some kind of handicap or dysfunction that prevents them from presenting an ID document? Is it possible to be more condescending and racist?

The decision is idiotic no matter how you look at it, but it reaches immeasurable heights of cynicism and hypocrisy if we take into account the collaborations that MLB has made with countries like Cuba or China, which, let’s say, are not the pinnacle of democracy.

We do not know if the MLB’s decision is based on “democratic” -or rather democrat- convictions or if it is motivated by the call made by the left to boycott companies that do not adhere to its political campaign against the reform that makes the Democratic Party so uncomfortable.

What does seem evident is that more and more people, fed up with the politicization, are turning their backs on sports organizations that are getting angry about these issues, as has happened with the NFL or the NBA.

The consequences of MLB’s idiocy

We can’t imagine anyone saying, “Wow, what a commendable political stance, I’m going to become a fan of this sport!” However, it is more feasible that in the wake of this MLB decision many people will decide to stop spending their time and money on the sport, which is becoming less and less concerned with the game and more and more concerned with politics.

By taking the All-Star Game away from Georgia, MLB has tried to hit the Republican Party over the head, but what it has succeeded in doing is hitting thousands of Atlanta businesses and workers in their backs, who will be deprived of millions of dollars in revenue. Atlanta, by the way, is majority black. That’s why the Idiot of the Week award goes to MLB this time. Kudos.
