In the last Idiot of the Week in El American, we jokingly warned that the Olympics were about to become one of those “trophies for all” tournaments. Well a few days later, Sarah Wiertz, sports editor of the German media outlet DW (Deutsche Welle), has said in all seriousness that medal counting should stop.

“What should count more, gold medals or total medals? The answer is neither because judging success with a medal table is questionable and promotes nationalism,” Sarah Wiertz said in her article.

After expressing regret over the fact that the USA surpassed China in the medal table, both in total medals and gold medals, Sarah Wiertz said that the medal table is “The medal table is undignified and should be abolished from the Olympics.”

According to Wiertz, the medal tally “Medal rankings only reflect output, which should not be the only measure of success.” The truth is that we don’t know how we have been so blind until now, thinking that sporting success should be measured by performance and results, and not by the number of smiles spread, the happiness of the children, and the glitter spilled from the rainbows.

According to her, “The medal count embodies the Olympic idea of striving for top performance” is achieved at the expense of “other Olympic values” — which she invents for the sake of it — such as “overcoming national narcissism.”

For Sarah Weirtz, China is not the problem

She gives China as an example, saying that they put too much pressure on their athletes by making them responsible for the country’s political aspirations.

Sarah Wiertz, in order not to directly criticize the Chinese communist regime and its sporting model of demands bordering on slavery, says that the medal table should be eliminated. The problem is not China, no, but competitiveness. If there are no medals, no more injustices.

It seems that Sarah Wiertz would not have minded any of this if China had come first in the medal standings. But since the final result has made Xi Jiping sadder than Eeyore — almost as much as if he had been compared to Winnie the Pooh — some solution will have to be found. Even if it means getting rid of the most iconic of the Olympic Games: the gold, the silver, and the bronze.

Paradoxically, although Sarah Wiertz does not like the competition, she seems to be determined to become the world record holder in the woke. For the time being, she has deservedly won the Idiot of the Week trophy from El American.
