After supporting and pushing for the dismantling of the Minneapolis Police Department, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is now blaming it for the increase in violence and crime in the city. Omar also called on the officers to start doing their job and taking their oath to protect the citizens and the streets of Minneapolis.

“What we must also recognize is that the reduction in policing currently in our city and the lawlessness that is happening is due to two things,” the congresswoman said during an event Saturday in Minneapolis. One, she explained, is that “the police have chosen to not fulfill their oath of office and to provide the public safety they are owed to the citizens they serve.”

According to Fox News, Omar’s comments “come as violent crime has surged in Minnesota over the last year, rising 17 % in total while setting records for murders.”

Violence in Minneapolis, Minnesota’s largest city, increased after the murder of George Floyd, violent protests last summer, police budget cuts — the city’s police department itself is reportedly experiencing staffing and morale problems — and also due to negative economic factors brought on by the pandemic. For example, the rise in violent crime coincides with rising unemployment.

According to CBS Minnesota, in a report last Oct. 18, in Minneapolis “from Jan. 1 to just last week, there were 75 homicides, which is up more than 114 % compared to the same time in 2019. Gunshot wound victims have soared 138 % in that same period to 530. Robbery, arson and aggravated assault crimes have also increased, according to data shared by the department.”

According to a report in the New York Times, attorney Ronald F. Meuser Jr — who represents several police officers who resigned from their jobs after the George Floyd case — said that “nearly 200 officers have applied to leave the Minneapolis Police Department because of what they describe as post-traumatic stress.” According to the New York paper, “the prospect that a department of about 850 could lose about 20 percent of its force in the coming months has prompted major concern.”

Despite the fact that there are several factors that can influence the growth of violence, especially the problems that are affecting the police, Rep. Omar only attacked the city’s police department calling it “dysfunctional.”

“The Minneapolis Police Department is the most dysfunctional in our state and probably in the country,” the representative said.

Violence has not only increased in Minneapolis, but across the country, especially in cities that significantly cut funding to police departments and are having soft-on-crime policies. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Milwaukee, Austin, Philadelphia; all were cities that cut police funding and all saw an increase in violence.

Users and political opponents react against Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar’s words were not very well received on social networks, as many users recalled that Omar decided to call for the abolition of the police department and several political adversaries took advantage of the Democrat’s comments to criticize her on Twitter.

“The person who said “we need to completely dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department,” supported the defunding of that police department, and demonizes law enforcement as a “cancer” on society is now… complaining that police aren’t stopping crime. Can’t make this up,” said Rep. and veteran Dan Crenshaw (R-TX).

Johan Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Dispatch, also criticized Ilhan Omar citing an Axios article and saying that the “Woman who wanted to dismantle the Minneapolis PD, now says crime is due to Minneapolis PD not doing enough police work.”

Likewise, Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene told Omar that she was the one who shared “the MFF bail bond link to bail out criminals that committed crimes during BLM riots,” adding that “defund the police has consequences. Supporting criminals has consequences.”
