The immigration crisis in the United States continues with alarming numbers of illegal immigrants detained by border patrol. In August alone, 208,887 apprehensions of immigrants were recorded, making it the second-highest month in two decades.
The number of apprehensions represents only a 2% drop compared to July of this year, where 212,000 illegal migrants were detained.
A DHS source told Fox News that 49% of the August detentions were of single adults and 44% of them were removed through public health protections under Title 42 implemented under the Trump administration and extended by the Biden administration.
Title 42 was implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which allows the removal of nearly all single adults and many families without giving them the opportunity to apply for asylum.
The Democratic administration has been removing single adults and some migrant families, but not children arriving unaccompanied. According to the source, there were 18,847 children admitted in August and 86,487 from family units, which represented a 4 % increase over July.
Fox News reporter Bill Melugin reported on Wednesday, September 15, that Border Patrol agents found a 3-month-old boy and a 2-year-old girl abandoned on the banks of the Rio Grande while on patrol.
Border Patrol facilities are overcrowded
Melugin showed on his social networks an overwhelming image with at least 4,200 migrants waiting to be detained while under the international bridge at Del Rio in Texas. “Local BP holding facilities are overwhelmed and over capacity,” the journalist noted.
The Biden administration has faced harsh criticism for its handling of the crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border, especially as the numbers of illegal migrants continue to be alarming.
In fact, the Supreme Court recently refused to delay an order forcing the Biden administration to re-implement the Migrant Protection Protocols, a Trump-era policy that keeps migrants in Mexico while they await their hearing.
Migrant crisis “unsustainable”
In mid-August, it became known that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas admitted in a leaked audio that the migration crisis is “unsustainable.”
Mayorkas, who is Joe Biden’s point man on immigration, said that the federal government’s system was not designed to handle an influx of migrants like the one the United States has seen in recent months.
The Biden official finally admitted that immigration laws are not being enforced: “We’ve had this before. We know exactly how to shut it down. We need to outlaw illegal entry.”
Mayorkas’ words come as a boomerang against the same Democratic administration that early in the administration prided itself on unraveling Trump’s hard-line immigration policies.
