After the New York Attorney General concluded that Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed women, the State Assembly is accelerating the process to initiate an impeachment.

Carl Heastie, Speaker of the New York State Assembly, announced that the independent impeachment investigation against Cuomo will move quickly and come to a conclusion soon.

Heastie issued a statement after Attorney General Letitia James and her office released a report detailing the findings of an independent investigation into allegations that Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women between 2013 and 2020.

“Once we receive all relevant documents and evidence from the Attorney General, we will move expeditiously and look to conclude our impeachment investigation as quickly as possible,” the Speaker said.

The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that it delivered the report to the Assembly Judiciary Committee and “will provide them with all relevant evidence.”

“The conduct by the Governor outlined in this report would indicate someone who is not fit for office,” he added.

Democratic Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Lavine said in a statement that Assembly counsel and independent counsel from the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell are reviewing the report.

“We are reviewing the Attorney General’s extensive report documenting sexual harassment and misconduct committed by Governor Cuomo,” Lavine said.

“The findings are extraordinarily disturbing. The details provided by the victims are repugnant.”

“I called for Governor Cuomo’s impeachment on February 11th, and I renew that call today,” Langworthy said in a statement.

“If he does not immediately resign, Speaker Carl Heastie must call for a special session to bring articles of impeachment to the floor for an up or down vote. Democrats in Albany have been protecting him for too long–time is up,” Langworthy added.

What is the impeachment process for Cuomo?

Under the New York Constitution, impeaching Cuomo would require a simple majority vote of the 150-member state Assembly, which is composed of 106 Democrats, 43 Republicans and one independent.

A majority of Assemblymembers expressed support for ending Cuomo’s term in office. In fact, a total of 43 Democrats had called for the governor to resign; they, along with 43 House Republicans, total 86; 10 more than what is required to impeach the governor.
