At least 28 Republican lawmakers have asked Christi Grimm, Acting Inspector General of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to thoroughly investigate the relationship between the NIH and the Wuhan lab where COVID-19 is believed to have originated.

In a letter, he urges a review of NIH funding to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), as well as whether any NIH officials communicated with the lab or its American sponsor to hush up the theory that the virus may have escaped from a lab.

“Unfortunately, NIH has played a major role in supporting WIV and its treasonous research in promoting false claims that discount the potential role of the lab funded by these institutes in the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Republican lawmakers wrote to Grimm on Tuesday.

The group was also alarmed to learn that WIV is eligible for taxpayer funding through 2024 due to an active warrant on file with NIH’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare.

WIV is currently in the eye of the storm over suspicions that the COVID-19 virus entered the human population in China due to an accidental leak from that lab, as prior to the outbreak its researchers were studying bat-based coronaviruses.
