Is It Ron DeSantis or Tom Cruise? Florida’s Governor Hot New Spot

Leer en Español

Hours before the Florida gubernatorial primaries, Ron DeSantis revolutionized the social networks with a new spot in which the Republican is practically indistinguishable from Tom Cruise. Inspired by the movie Top Gun: Maverick, the governor’s campaign launched Top Gov, and it immediately went viral.

This Tuesday, August 23, primaries were held throughout the Sunshine State, and it was confirmed that Governor DeSantis will face former Florida Governor Charlie Crist, who defeated Nikki Fried, the state’s Commissioner of Agriculture, by a wide margin in the Democratic primary.

In this context, the governor’s campaign surprised with a new ad inspired by the latest Tom Cruise movie. The one-minute film takes place at the freedom headquarters, where DeSantis explains the step-by-step of the mission baptized as “taking on the corporate media.”

Wearing combat fatigues and tight boots, the governor enumerates the steps to be taken while clips of his most memorable discussions with reporters are shown, such as the one that took place while discussing the Parental Rights in Education bill.

He then heads to a small plane, from where he ends his speech and gives way to a child, his son Mason, 4, who is in charge of ending the spot with a “let’s turn and burn.”

DeSantis to face former Republican Governor in November

DeSantis’ opponent, Charlie Crist, was state attorney general under Bush and in 2006 was elected as a Republican to the office DeSantis now holds. He was the first Florida governor not to seek re-election since 1964 and instead ran for a Senate seat as an independent.

Crist failed in his bid to reach the upper chamber at the hands of Marco Rubio, who received 48% of the vote to Crist’s 29% and Kendrick Meek’s 20%, the Democratic candidate of the moment.

Sometime later, he left the Republican Party, endorsed Barack Obama for president in 2012, and was even a speaker at the Democratic National Convention, where he said, “I didn’t leave the GOP; it left me.” Since then, he radicalized his positions and currently serves as a member of the House of Representatives for the Democratic Party.

Four years ago, DeSantis defeated Andrew Gillum by a narrow 0.4% and expects an interesting margin of victory in 2022.
