Is John Fetterman Healthy to Serve in the Senate?

Leer en Español

During May, when John Fetterman was still seeking the Democratic nomination for the Pennsylvania Senate, he suffered a cardiovascular accident (CVA) that sidelined him from the campaign until mid-August. Since then, his public appearances drew the attention of social media users, particularly regarding the candidate’s health.

The current vice-governor gave a speech last Monday before some local workers. During and after the speech, some users on Twitter were concerned about his health condition, given that he evidenced some problems expressing himself.

“Send me to Washington, D.C., to send–, so I can work with Senator Casey. And I can champion the union way of life–, in Jersey, excuse me in D.C. Thank you. Thank you very much. And it’s an honor–, I live eight minutes away from here. And when I leave tonight, I got three miles away, Dr. Oz in his mansion in New Jersey, you’ve got a friend, and you have an ally. Send me to Washington, D.C.,” Fetterman said with difficulty last Monday.

The aftermath of his health difficulty prompted Twitter users to speak out. “Fetterman can barely speak. This is just sad;” “He’s not well;” “Dude… you don’t sound so good; Why does he keep going? He needs to get well;” “The man needs to take time to get well. He is not,” and “Something’s wrong with him,” were some reactions.

This situation also caused the Fetterman campaign to seek to avoid a debate with Dr. Oz at all costs. “We are working to figure out what a fair debate would look like with the lingering impacts of the auditory processing in mind,” said campaign strategist Rebecca Katz.

“To be absolutely clear, the occasional issues he is having with auditory processing have no bearing on his ability to do the job as senator. John is healthy and fully capable of showing up and doing the work,” she added.

The Oz campaign is a bit impatient with the debates, and even published an ironic list of concessions they are willing to make in order for the meetings between the candidates to take place.

The Democrat will face Mehmet Oz on Nov. 8, and the winner of their contest will take Pat Toomey’s seat in the upper chamber. Currently, Fetterman is ahead in the polls. For example, the Real Clear Politics average of polls shows a 6.5% lead in favor of the current lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania.

The latest FiveThirtyEight forecast shows the odds of victory at 79% to 21%, in favor of the Democrat. The keystone state seat is critical for Republicans to claim the Senate majority, making it one of the most challenging races of the 2022 cycle.
