Israel is on a path that keeps it on the verge of a return to post-COVID normalcy. This Sunday, it completed its de-escalation plan after more than two months of government-mandated shutdowns and “stay-at-home” orders. But in addition, it announced that citizens can walk outdoors without masks.

According to Our World in Data, Israel has already vaccinated 61.81% of citizens with at least one dose and 57.51% with two doses. The country, with a population of approximately 9 million people, started the vaccination campaign with a rate of 11.55 doses per 100 inhabitants.

Israel started vaccinating December 19 and began giving injections to 150,000 people per day. It gave priority to those over 60 years of age, health care workers and people with previous illnesses.

Ran Balicer, chairman of the national advisory team advising the Israeli government on its response to COVID-19, showed a chart explaining how vaccination contributed to the decrease in cases.

Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, celebrated Israel’s progress, arguing that it is a demonstration that vaccines are effective and that equitable distribution must be pushed to achieve pandemic control.

“Wow. Talk about crushing the curve. Amazing progress in Israel. Vaccines are the way forward. That’s why we need to do much better on equitable distribution both in the U.S. and globally,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ernesto Kahan, professor emeritus at Tel Aviv University, explained that Israel’s success is also due to the fact that it has a health system that allowed for the good management of the epidemic. “This health system did not emerge suddenly, but as a consequence of a long process of socialization, largely conditioned by its needs and dynamics, over a period of more than a hundred years,” he wrote on the official website of the Royal European Academy of Doctors.
