Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Benet spoke with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to whom he conveyed that Iran is engaging in nuclear blackmail as a negotiating tactic in the resumed talks in Vienna, and urged him to immediately cease contacts with Tehran.

In their conversation, Blinken briefed Benet on the development of negotiations between Iran and major world powers to refloat the 2015 nuclear pact (JCPOA), and the Israeli head of government expressed his opposition to the contacts going ahead in the wake of the recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to the IAEA, Iran has begun the process of enriching uranium to 20 % with advanced centrifuges at its subway facility at Fordow, which according to Israel is further evidence that the Islamic republic is pursuing a strategy of nuclear blackmail as a position of strength in the negotiations.

In view of this, Benet appealed to Blinken for an immediate cessation of negotiations to be accompanied by concrete measures taken by the major powers.

This Monday, negotiations resumed in the Austrian capital between Iran and Germany, France, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, and the United States indirectly, to save the nuclear pact.

The United States left the agreement in 2018 under the administration of Donald Trump. After the coming to power of the current president, Joe Biden, new negotiations began between Iran and the six major powers, while Israel strongly opposes a return to the nuclear deal.

The Jewish state considers Tehran as its main enemy in the region and a threat to its security.
