Caitlyn Jenner, TV star and Olympic champion, said Saturday that she opposes trans people participating in women’s sports. She made the statements in a meeting with the media. She argued that it is a matter of fair competition.

The statements of the influential transgender activist on the participation of trans athletes in women’s sports generated a debate on social media.

I didn’t expect to get asked this on my Saturday morning coffee run, but I’m clear about where I stand. It’s an issue of fairness and we need to protect girls’ sports in our schools.

The star – who recently confirmed her candidacy for California governor – explained that while she didn’t expect to be asked about it, she stands by her position on the issue.

Jenner’s comment comes after Republican representatives in the Florida state legislature this week promoted a measure that would prohibit transgender athletes from competing in girls’ high school sports. The measure will become law when signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis.

I’m honored to run this legislation on behalf of all women and girls who want to be able to showcase their skill and athletic abilities on a level playing field.https://t.co/7u9qontMjZ

Supporters of the bill claim that transgender women have an unfair competitive advantage in athletic competition. In fact, Republican Rep. Kaylee Tuck, who pushed the bill, made it clear that her proposal intends to promote fair competition and a level playing field among teens in sports.
