John McAfee, 75, creator of the famous antivirus software of the same name, was found dead on Wednesday in his prison cell in Spain.

McAfee was a controversial man until the end of his life: rich, libertarian and excessively eccentric. The creator of McAfee antivirus was a character who led a fierce battle against the world’s tax systems.

On January 22, 2019, in a video posted on his Twitter profile, McAfee asserted that he did not pay “federal taxes for eight years. Taxes are theft, unconstitutional.” All this amid accusations against him for evading tax burdens.

McAfee’s life was a strange one. The tycoon had, in fact, a life bordering on fiction. He fled Belize for the alleged murder of his neighbor before being questioned by the police, claimed he was a father more than 47 times, had a wedding with a prostitute he hired when he was deported to the United States from Guatemala, was arrested on a yacht in the Dominican Republic in 2019 with several firearms on board and had a particular passion for high-caliber weapons.

As a good libertarian, McAfee dabbled in the world of cryptocurrencies. That complex system of currencies that attempts to put in check fiat money and central banks around the planet. His business activities were investigated by the Department of Justice, an authority that found alleged tax evasions in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

According to the American prosecution, McAfee evaded millions of dollars through the promotion of cryptocurrencies and also the sale of the rights for the publication of his biography. The US Justice requested the capture of the billionaire who was apprehended on October 3, 2020 before taking a flight to Turkey.

Already imprisoned, the United States requested the extradition of the controversial billionaire, a man who was unequivocally critical of American foreign policy and who claimed to have evidence of corruption secrets of security and intelligence agencies such as the CIA and the U.S. Government.

According to the Spanish newspaper El País, the man “was admitted to module 1 of the Brians 2 penitentiary center”, where he was found dead by prison surveillance experts and prison doctors who tried to resuscitate him without success.

According to the official version, everything indicates that McAfee’s death was a suicide, even his lawyer, Javier Villalba, told Reuters news agency that McAfee’s death was due to the fact that he could not stand any more time in prison. “This is the result of a cruel system that had no reason to keep this man in jail for so long.”

But there is someone who refutes John McAfee’s suicide, and that is himself, who for months alerted the world to his own death a la Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire accused of sex trafficking who was also found dead in his cell.

John McAfee’s disturbing messages

The antivirus creator had a controversial life and his death was no exception: the man warned about his possible suicide during the last months.

“A world ruled by the powerful, the clever and the corrupt is never what it seems.” That was one of the many messages posted by John McAfee after his arrest.

In many of them, the entrepreneurial antivirus creator said it was a difficult time in his life. “Don’t believe anything you hear. And be suspicious even of your own eyes,” the message also said.

Similarly, he assured that he had no regrets about what he had lived through, nor about the decisions he had made. “If I had a regret, it would not be for changing anything I have done. But to have carried my past as a burden instead of letting it carry me.”

But, those messages from months earlier weren’t the only ones. In 2019, John McAfee said that if he hung himself it wouldn’t be his fault. “Know that if I hang myself, a la Epstein, it will be no fault of mine,” he wrote on Twitter. Meanwhile, the cybersecurity entrepreneur’s Instagram posted an image with the letter “Q,” an apparent reference to the “QAnon” conspiracy theory.

McAfee’s admission to prison was on October 4 last year. This was by order of the Spanish National Court. His death, due to everything surrounding his case, from enigmatic messages on networks to his recurring accusations against the United States for allegedly wanting to end his life, will be a controversial topic within popular culture, similar to the suicide of Epstein, who was a friend of the tycoon and also died under strange circumstances.
