Federal Judge Laurence Silberman has accused The New York Times and the Washington Post -both members of the media establishment- of exercising “shocking” bias against Republicans. Silberman called both outlets “the newspapers of the Democratic Party” and blames the booming media industry for enforcing a bias against the Republican Party.

Silberman, head of the D.C. Senior Circuit, said in an opinion paper that the orientation of the Times, the Post and to some extent the Wall Street Journal “is followed by The Associated Press and most major newspapers around the country (such as the Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald and Boston Globe).” About the Journal he said that “its news section leans in the same direction.”

Judge Silberman believes that “almost all television, network and cable, is a Democratic Party trumpet. Even the government-backed National Public Radio follows the same line.”

Caveats are also part of the judge’s considerations. He writes that “it should be kept in mind that the first step of any possible authoritarian or dictatorial regime is to seize control of communications, particularly the delivery of news.”

In this context he also asserts that “it is fair to conclude, therefore, that one-party control of the press and media is a threat to a viable democracy. It may even give rise to countervailing extremism.”

Silberman also commented on California’s technology-corporate hub, Silicon Valley. The judge stated that it “also has enormous influence over the distribution of news” and added that it “similarly filters the delivery of news in ways favorable to the Democratic Party.”

“The First Amendment, guarantees a free press to foster a vibrant exchange of ideas. But a biased press can distort the marketplace.” “And when the media have demonstrated their willingness, if not their eagerness, to distort so much, it is a profound mistake to defend unwarranted legal rules that only serve to enhance the power of the press.”

The judge’s criticism comes amid a turbulent phase Big Tech is going through, with five open lawsuits and a conspiracy revealed by TIME magazine detailing how the American left, the mainstream media (such as the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal) and big tech companies teamed up to hide information and misinform against Donald Trump.
