The trial of former police agent Derek Chauvin, accused of murdering George Floyd, begins this Monday. The court proceedings begin with jury selection.

On May 25, 2020, the country was shocked after videos were released showing the ex-officer pressing his knee against the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, who was pronounced dead hours later. Chauvin and other officers were arresting the man for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill at a store.

The trial will be televised due to pandemic restrictions. This has also caused the three other officers involved in the arrest, Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, charged with lesser charges, to be tried separately.

Chauvin faces charges of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. It will take a unanimous verdict by the 12-member jury to put Chauvin behind bars.

Eric Nelson, attorney for the former Minneapolis cop, will argue that Floyd’s death was caused by fentanyl use and possible underlying health conditions.

Meanwhile, prosecutors plan to present a list of cases that claim Chauvin used similar restraints to the ones he used against Floyd on the job.
