Vice President Kamala Harris, left her meeting with the press evading a question related to the scandals surrounding New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
This Wednesday, March 10, Harris chose not to respond about calls for Cuomo’s resignation from dozens of lawmakers over mounting allegations of alleged sexual harassment.
The VP spoke briefly to reporters after House lawmakers approved the Senate version of the $1.9 billion coronavirus relief package. After the event concluded, Harris was asked by a reporter to give her take on the allegations against Cuomo.
In a video posted on Twitter by CBS News’ Tim Perry, Kamala Harris can be seen ignoring the question about the New York governor and leaving the press room.
Kamala Harris’s deafening silence
The vice president, who will represent the United States on the U.N. Commission on Women, has not issued a statement on the allegations against Cuomo; a somewhat paradoxical position since it was she who maintained a tough and highly critical stance against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and former Democratic Senator Al Franken when they faced allegations of sexual misconduct.
While Kamala Harris has stayed on the sidelines, White House press secretary Jen Psaki addressed what would be the vice president’s stance last week, “I think (Harris’) view is that she believes a woman should be treated with respect. Her voices should be heard,” Psaki said.
Harris’ muted position is not the same as when she supported sexual harassment allegations against now-President Biden, saying of the women accusing the Democratic leader, “I believe them and I respect them for their courage.”
Now, in the wake of six allegations of sexual misconduct against Cuomo, Harris remains silent despite holding the second-highest office in the country.
Following the scandalous allegations this Thursday, March 11, half a hundred Democratic state lawmakers called for the governor’s resignation, while the speaker of the Assembly said he would hold a meeting “on possible ways forward.”
The statement from Cuomo’s fellow Democrats cited both the mounting sexual harassment allegations against him and the cover-up of the total number of nursing home deaths and said the official “has lost the trust of the public and the state legislature, rendering him ineffective at this time.”
For his part, the governor has denied all the accusations, but apologized and said he was “misunderstood” for being “playful.”
Cuomo assures that he will not resign.
