Rapper Kanye West proved he has what his artistic elite counterparts lack: courage. The singer wore a T-shirt with the text White Lives Matter during a fashion show for his clothing brand, Yeezy, while calling the group Black Lives Matter a scam.
The reality is that, from his position as a celebrity, it takes a lot of courage to take a stand against BLM, a movement that has brought polarization, violence and enormous problems to American society in recent years.
All over the world —from actors, singers and even athletes— BLM’s slogan and discourse spread and popularized as irrefutable lyrics. Soccer players knelt meekly as a sign of respect for the movement, artists published the group’s slogans on their networks and politicians hypocritically came out in support of this organization while its most violent followers looted American businesses and destroyed the streets of the United States during the summer of 2020.
A movement that became a global brand thanks to Nike and other big brands and that was driven by artists, who love to jump on any fashion trend to look considerate and pristine in the eyes of public opinion.
It mattered little to the artists that BLM has links with the criminal Sao Paulo Forum and that it is, in its ideals, a Marxist and profoundly anti-American organization. It mattered little that this movement used resentment as fuel to pit Americans against each other. The famous, in their eagerness to appear and superficially show solidarity, cowardly supported this terrible and hypocritical organization because they could not stay out of the ephemeral current of the moment.
But, fortunately, there are still brave artists who dare to take politically incorrect positions, without fear of cancellers or bigots within the ranks of wokeism.
