North Texas has set up locations where citizens affected by the winter storm can receive food assistance. From banking agencies to the state government, many organizations have joined forces to offer help to the community, according to Dallas News.

According to the newspaper, Governor Greg Abbott’s Major Disaster Declaration, first issued on February 12th, will free up funds for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP).

This program provides short-term food assistance to families and is designed to help after disasters when people return to their homes and when access to electricity and grocery stores is restored.

Those already registered in this system may request replacements for food lost or destroyed due to winter weather by calling 2-1-1. SNAP recipients will also receive an additional 15 percent increase in their benefit amount through June.

As of last Thursday, Dallas-based Harvest Project Food Rescue, Warren United Methodist Church and Masjid Al-Islam’s Beacon of Light program teamed up to provide hot meals.

On Friday, Harvest Project Food Rescue also offered a mobile warming station to the homeless in South Dallas and distributed hot meals. In addition, they handed out coats, blankets, gloves and hygiene kits donated by Beacon of Light.

In Fort Worth, Funky Town Fridge founder Kendra Richardson said she and volunteers have been making welfare check calls to their community and delivering water and food to those who request it.
