Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin, a former ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, announced Thursday that he plans to run for governor of New York state in next year’s election.

Zeldin, 41, a lawyer who has represented the 1st District of Long Island (New York) in the U.S. Congress since 2015, made his intention public on Fox News and said he seeks to “restore New York to its glory.”

He is the highest profile conservative politician who wants to dispute the post to the acting governor of the state, Democrat Andrew Cuomo, who is being investigated for sexual harassment and for his management of the deceased in nursing homes in the coronavirus crisis.

Cuomo, governor since 2011, has yet to make a statement on whether he intends to run for re-election to the post, which unlike many others in the country, has no term limits.

On Cuomo, who is in low hours for his alleged sexual harassment and mishandling of the pandemic, Lee Zeldin said he has “abused the power and trust given to him” and must go to “save New York.”

Lee Zeldin, one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, said on “Fox and Friends” that Democratic domination of New York state and city is “forcing” many residents to leave because of high taxes, job losses, regulations and rising crime.

His campaign video portrays him as, “A congressman, a soldier and a family man fighting to protect our wallets, our safety and our freedoms.”

More than a hundred state legislators and nearly all of New York’s federal congress members have called on Cuomo to step aside from office and he is under the shadow of impeachment, but he has insisted on letting the investigations run their course.
