The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said this Friday that the reopening of the land border between his country and the United States closed since the beginning due to the pandemic for most activities, will take place “soon.”
The president was questioned about the recent travel alert issued by the United States warning against traveling to Mexico due to the existing crime in some regions and the expansion of the pandemic.
“There is a very good atmosphere in relations with the United States,” said López Obrador in response, who reiterated that next week he will speak with the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, about the migratory phenomenon.
And he said: “The opening of the borders will happen soon, completely.”
López Obrador said that from the “U.S. side” there is also “the demand for the normalization of relations and complete exchanges.”
“We don’t see it taking too long. We are going to reach an agreement soon,” he concluded.
On March 21, 2020, Mexico and the United States closed their borders for non-essential travel, that is, those for recreational or tourist purposes.
And last March 18, coinciding with a new migratory wave, Mexico announced that it would restrict land transit on its southern border as well, claiming that the spread of the coronavirus had to be stopped.
On April 20, the administration of President Joe Biden extended once again, until May 21, the restrictions on non-essential travel across the borders with Mexico and Canada, as part of the measures to contain the covid-19 pandemic.
Mexico’s border with the United States, which stretches more than 3,000 kilometers, is also one of the busiest in the world, with more than one million people crossing every day and $1.7 billion worth of goods and services being exchanged daily.
