llamado a las armas, El American

This Monday, Chicago’s Democratic mayor, Lori Lightfoot, made a “call to arms” against the Supreme Court. The message was expressed on her Twitter account, in what could be interpreted as a call to directly confront the Supreme Court with guns.

To my friends in the LGBTQ+ community—the Supreme Court is coming for us next. This moment has to be a call to arms.

When the Court is accused of “coming for us,” and a “call to arms” is made, it is clear that the justices are being singled out as attackers, who would have to be defended against with arms. This is a call to violence that endangers the judges and constitutes an attack on the institutions of the country.

The definition of insurrection is “violent uprising against an authority or government.” In this case, the mayor textually makes a “call to arms” against the Court. For much less, the Democrats have accused the Republicans of calling for insurrection. In this case, the term is correct and the conduct of the mayor, who knows what she is doing, should be clearly denounced. We are not talking about a Twitter user making light-hearted comments.

A few days ago, President Biden assured that MAGA is “the most extreme political organization in the history of America,” I think the most extreme and dangerous people are on the Democratic side.

This message comes a week after a leaked draft of a February court vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. While that is not the final decision and the vote may change, a final ruling to that effect would mean that the power reverts back to each state to decide abortion regulations and laws. So, while states like New York will likely continue to have broad abortion permits, states like Florida could impose regulations or bans.

On Monday morning the Democratic mayor promised that Chicago will be an “oasis” for abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Lightfoot announced that to start she would allocate $500,000 for access to abortion care in her city, including transportation and lodging for women coming from other states. He asserted that Chicago would become an “island of reproductive freedom” and a “safe haven” in the Midwest.

Since the draft was leaked the situation has been getting worse. This is unprecedented in the history of this country and causes a problem for judges, who after this episode have reason to distrust the people they work with on a daily basis. In addition, after the leak, there have been demonstrations outside the Supreme Court and churches, violent attacks on anti-abortion centers, and even demonstrations outside the private homes of some judges.

In the midst of this dangerous attack on institutionality, the mayor of one of the largest cities in this country comes up with the idea of making a “call to arms” against the Court. It is worth noting that if Mayor Lightfoot were a Republican, surely her Twitter account would have already been blocked and most journalists would be on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but since she is a Democrat, the reaction of many is simply to turn away and look the other way.

This attack on the Court is extremely dangerous and every one of the lies that are woven around it must be dismantled. The most important thing is to make it clear that reversing Roe v. Wade does not mean banning abortion, it means taking away the Court’s power over the issue and handing it over to the people, so that each state can decide how they want to regulate the issue.

But at the same time it must be clear that this leak is also a desperate move to distract the country’s attention from the serious problems we face and the fact that the Biden administration seems to only make things worse.

Today gas prices have reached a new record high, inflation is also at historic levels, insecurity is increasingly unbearable, there is a crisis at the border, and parents in every state in this country face daily the threat of teachers who want to fill the schools with gender theories and critical race theory.

It’s not true that the Supreme Court is going to ban abortion nationwide, but what is true is that America faces serious problems that instead of being solved are being aggravated. In a few months will be the midterm elections, and Americans must reflect to curb the many problems of this great country.
