The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a series of recommendations to attack the new strain of COVID-19 including the use of double masks.

Bad news from the CDC

While for the first stage of the coronavirus the use of a single mask was suggested, now with the COVID-19 variants it seems necessary to use two of them and also to adjust them well to the face to avoid contagion, according to the CDC.

According to EFE, the new CDC guidelines say that it is best to wear a cloth mask over a surgical and high protection mask; and as an alternative, they suggest a single high protection mask of the N-95 type. They also ask to tie knots in the elastics to have no lateral holes.

The medical authorities also consider it “more urgent than ever” to accelerate the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 to stop the spread of the most contagious or potentially more virulent variants as soon as possible.

“Everyone should wear a mask when they are in public, or at home when they are with others who do not live at home,” explained CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.

The good news

The CDC also had good news for Americans: people who have received the full dose of the vaccine will be able to abandon the mandatory quarantines.

The specialists explain that some results observed with the Pfizer vaccine in Israel, where vaccination is already massive, point to a certain reduction of the transmission and also of the viral load, which would considerably reduce the probability that someone vaccinated could infect other people.

“The individual and societal benefits of avoiding unnecessary quarantine may outweigh the potential, but unknown, risk of transmission among vaccinated persons,” the CDC recommendation concludes.

Under this approach, people who have received the last dose of vaccine may choose whether or not to maintain a quarantine, as long as close contact with someone infected occurred 14 days after inoculation and for three months after receiving the vaccine, since there has not yet been time to test the vaccines’ long-term protection.

Other good news for Americans is that according to the renowned Dr. Fauci, “there will be vaccines for everyone starting in April.”

“Come April, almost everyone and anyone, in any category will be able to start getting vaccinated,” he said.

He added that it will take “several more months” to deliver the shots to all adults, but predicted that herd immunity can be achieved by late summer.

So far, around 30 million Americans have already received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. On the other hand, 10 million citizens have already received the two doses.
