Mar-a-Lago Affidavit Shows Persecution of Trump

LAST FRIDAY a federal judge made public the redacted version of the affidavit that was used to raid Mar-a-Lago, the private residence of former President Trump. Everything contained in the document only confirms that there is a political persecution against Trump.

The information revealed in the affidavit is a cold water bath for the expectation that what there was against Trump, which justified the raid, was something big. It all boils down in the end to a concern by the FBI and the National Archives about documents Trump may have withheld at Mar-a-Lago. I insist: a concern.

So far everything that has been published about the Mar-a-Lago break-in (be it leaks, revelations by some media or documents about it), show that there is no major investigation against the former president. There is no suspicion of possible criminal behavior or anything serious. It is simply a dispute over some documents that, surely, are not that important either.

But, instead of following a civilized and moderate process of going to a district court that would require Trump to properly handle the documents, the FBI decided to raid his private residence, even breaking into his safe. And once again the double standard is exposed: because Hillary Clinton, who had a much more serious misdemeanor in this regard, escaped unscathed, without even a formal investigation. Sandy Berger, Bill Clinton’s National Security Advisor, pleaded guilty in 2004 to taking home highly sensitive classified documents linked to Al Qaeda. He was simply fined $50,000.

The outrage against Trump is obscene. There is a political persecution, which ends up proving the former president himself right. They turn him into a martyr, too, and flatten the ground for him to return to the White House in 2024. The attempts to get him out of the game are not going to work, unless they dare to disqualify and prosecute him. In that case they would be leading the United States into an unprecedented political crisis. They are irresponsible.
