Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) warned Wednesday that removing the Colombian guerrilla group FARC from the State Department’s blacklist could encourage “narco-terrorists” and “regimes” that sponsor them in the region.

Rubio reacted in a statement after “receiving notice that the U.S. Department of State will remove The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.”

Rubio, of the Republican Party and for Florida, recalled that “Colombia has endured decades of pain and suffering at the hands of heinous terrorist attacks led by the FARC.”

“The Biden Administration’s decision to remove the FARC from the Foreign Terrorist Organization list risks emboldening narcoterrorists and the regimes that sponsor them throughout our region,” he said.

For that reason, he said, “Congress must hold hearings on this decision to examine what it means for stability in the hemisphere, as well as U.S. and Colombian security interests.”

The notification to the Legislature is the preliminary step for the removal of the FARC from the State Department’s list of terrorist groups. There is no fixed deadline for this new policy to enter into force.
