Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Virginia Democrat Mark Warner joined forces this week. They sent a private letter to Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines and Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding explanations about the FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago property.

According to an exclusive report by Axios, the letter asks the intelligence authorities for all the information related to the raid against Trump, from the logic behind the search warrant to the documents taken during the operation, in a classified manner.

“In his remarks, Attorney General Garland claimed there was a substantial public interest in the execution of an unprecedented search warrant on President Trump”, Rubio said in the statement to Axios. “The Intelligence Committee has asked the Department of Justice to share with us, on a classified basis, the specific intelligence documents seized from Mar-a-Lago.”

A spokesman explained to Axios that since the Senate Intelligence Committee is responsible for overseeing counterintelligence matters, including the proper or mishandling of classified information, the raid on Mar-A-Lago falls under its competence.

In that regard, the spokesman said the committee asked the DOJ and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to provide all classified documents that were seized in the raid, as well as an “an assessment of potential risks to national security as a result of their mishandling”.

The request by Rubio and Warner would be the first bipartisan effort to oversee the FBI’s proceedings against Trump, and a sign that members of both parties are concerned about transparency in the actions of federal authorities.

By requesting a classified review, the committee would have broader access to all information regarding the raid against Trump.
