Florida Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar celebrated the decision of Governor Ron DeSantis, who will require schools to teach civic education and the “evils of communism.”

“The evils of communism cannot be whitewashed in schools,” Salazar said.

The daughter of Cuban exiles, the Republican said on Fox News that every governor in the United States should “follow the example” of DeSantis to educate young Americans about the dangers of communism, socialism and totalitarianism.

In that regard, he stated that half of American teenagers believe that communism and socialism are good and most cannot tell the difference between the Communist Manifesto and the Declaration of Independence.

Fighting the evils of communism

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 5, SB 1108 and HB 233 into law on Tuesday, which is intended to teach about the evils of communism and totalitarian ideologies. It also promotes civics instruction and education in public schools, from kindergarten through higher education.

“I’m proud to sign three bills today that prioritize civics education in our schools,” said Governor Ron DeSantis.

He further added, “Florida students will learn about the patriots who come to America after fleeing communist regimes.”

Ana María Rodríguez (R-FL) explained the importance of this project for families who managed to flee communism: “As a daughter and granddaughter of Cuban refugees, my family knows firsthand the dangers Communism and the fatal consequences of totalitarian regimes,” she said.
