Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) delivered a message during the protests held by Cuban Americans in Washington DC in front of the White House.
On Monday, July 26, hundreds of thousands of Cubans living in the United States, especially from Florida, came to the capital to ask the Biden White House to aid in Cuba in their fight to return freedom to the island that has been under a tyrannical socialist model for more than 62 years.
“Listen to me guys: first of all thank you all for being here. There is heat, it cost work and money to be here (…) but it is highly important to show the White House that we are many,” Rep. Salazar began her address on Monday during the massive demonstrations in D.C.
“Second, these faces, these are our American friends in the Federal Congress,” added Salazar pointing to the representatives who accompanied the Cubans as the crowd thanked and applauded the gesture to the cry of “Thank you!”.
In this case, Salazar particularly referred to Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL); Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Victoria Spartz (R-IN), Mike McCaul (R-TX), among others present.
“Thank you and remember them well, because when Cuba is free, independently of anyone, they are going to be in the memory of you, who were with us. They are Americans and they know very well what is represented in the United States. The same thing we want: freedom!” said María Elvira Salazar.
Each of the representatives gave a message in support of the Cuban people. Rep. Crenshaw even signed one of the most moving moments by chanting slogans in Spanish and asking President Biden to “break down the wall of oppression” in Cuba.
“We need to do two things,” Salazar insisted in his message, “call the White House and ask (…) them to get involved and call the international community to be with us. Number two, the most important thing, the immediate thing: we have to put internet. Why? Because the moment the Cuban people do not feel alone and they know that the beatings, the tortures, the shootings and everything they are suffering, we will see it, there will be millions and millions of Cubans in the streets”.
Representative María Elvira Salazar, together with the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, and the commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, had already held a press conference last July 7 where they discussed the possibility of the United States helping to reestablish the Internet in Cuba when the citizens of the island are protesting against the Castro regime.
To close her message, the representative asked for a prayer for Cuba, a prayer for freedom. In addition, she warned President Biden that Cuban Americans will not leave the streets until the White House commits to the Cuban cause.
“The last thing, the third thing, let’s ask God. Raise your hand and tell him: we need you to help us to free us from these satanic forces that are on top of the island,” Salazar said. “I am sure there are hundreds from my district, thank you for being here, we are all united (…) we are with you and we are not going to stop being in the streets until Biden responds.”
