Joe Biden has announced his plan to fight the Coronavirus pandemic. He predicts that in 100 days he will be able to change the course of the disease.
Biden introduced his team of senior health officials and noted that his program has three parts: “masking, vaccination and the reopening of schools.”
The Democrat President-elect announced that the first three goals to be met include making mask use mandatory.
He assured he will require the use of the masks where possible and according to the law, such as in federal buildings, interstate travel on airplanes, trains or buses; and added that he will work with governors and mayors to implement the same measures in their cities.
Biden said that no matter what political views or preferences one has, he said the important thing is that citizens wear the masks for 100 days after he takes office. “One hundred days to make a difference; it’s not a political statement but a patriotic act,” he said.
When it comes to vaccines, Biden pledged that 100 million Americans will have access to injections within 100 days.
“We will follow the guidance of the scientists and give the vaccines to those who are most at risk. That includes health care personnel and people receiving long-term care; and, as soon as possible, that will include educators,” he said.
On his third goal of getting the country’s schools up and running, he said it will depend on the actions of Congress in providing enough resources to manufacture and distribute the vaccines.
“If Congress provides the funds we need to protect students, educators and staff, and if states and cities implement strong public health measures that we can all follow, then my team will work to see that most of our schools can be open by the end of my first 100 days,” he stated.
Biden noted that he developed all three objectives in consultation with Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases and the best-known member of the current president’s coronavirus task force. Biden appointed Fauci to be his chief medical advisor on Coronavirus.
While Biden was promising 100 million vaccines for the first 100 days, President Donald Trump announced that once the FDA gives the go-ahead for their application, mass distribution will begin.
“We are just a few days away from FDA approval and we are putting a lot of pressure on them. When it arrives, we will immediately start massive distribution. Before ‘Operation Warp Speed’, the time for development and approval of a vaccine could be infinitely long. We are very happy to have been able to do things at a level that no one has ever seen before,” confirmed the president.
Trump believes that the United States should be supplied first as a priority by the pharmaceutical companies that developed the vaccine in this country, such as Pfizer, and/or those that received federal funds such as Moderna and AstraZeneca.
Will the good-old days be back by fall?
For the United States to return to normal by 2021, 75-85% of the population would need to be vaccinated against COVID-19, said Dr. Anthony Fauci.
According to Fauci, places like Broadway will shine again in the early fall of next year. He said that if people get vaccinated in the spring, as planned, New Yorkers, and the entire country, could return to normal. The vaccine is expected to be distributed in mid to late December.
The expert indicated that a return to normal would mean that 75% or 85% of people would need to be vaccinated, and he stressed that patients with underlying conditions should be the priority.
However, a few days before the distribution of the vaccines in the United States, the United Kingdom announced an investigation into possible allergic reactions to the injections.
British officials said Wednesday that people who have a “significant history” of allergic reactions should not receive the new Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, after learning of two cases of patients who had adverse reactions.
