The celebrated Hollywood actor, Matthew McConaughey, ruled out “for now” his intentions to run for governor of Texas.

In a video posted on his social media, McConaughey said that during the time he considered his candidacy he learned that American politics “needs a new purpose” and that there are “divisions that need to be healed.”

“As a simple boy born in the small town of Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership,” the actor said. “It’s a path that intimidates and calls for reflection. It’s a path I choose not to embark on for now.”

The Interstellar star also said that Americans “need more confidence in their lives” and that there is a need to “shine a light on our shared values: those that cross party lines and build bridges rather than burn them.”

McConaughey had been pondering the option since last year when he participated in podcasts such as Russell Brand’s and Joe Rogan’s, in which he discussed his political ideas far from the predominant leftist stance in Hollywood.

The Greenlights author went on to lead local polls with 44%, more than 10 points ahead of incumbent Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican.
