Less than 38 % of Americans approve of Biden’s performance as head of state 10 months after taking office, while 64 % of voters surveyed believe Biden should not run for re-election in 2024. The data comes from a poll conducted by USA Today and Suffolk University.
The study shows a rejection of Joe Biden’s administration by 59 % of the voters consulted, while USA Today states that support for the current administration “plunged” among independent voters who gave him their vote to go against Donald Trump.
With respect to Vice President Kamala Harris, the data look even worse. Only 27.8 of those polled approve of her performance in the White House, with 51.2 % who disapprove and 21 % who prefer not to answer.
Nearly half (46 %) of the voters surveyed believe that Biden’s performance has been worse than they expected, including 16 % of his own voters and 44 % of the independents surveyed.
Notably, of the 64 % who do not want Biden to run again, 28 % are Democrats. This contrasts with 58 % who oppose Trump’s candidacy, which includes 24 % of the Republican base.
Biden’s tenure and the 2022 election
The poll results come with a year to go before the 2022 elections, in which Democrats and Republicans will battle for control of the Senate and House of Representatives, now dominated by the Democratic majority.
This could change next year, according to the poll, since if the elections were today, 46 % of Americans would vote for a Republican candidate for Congress, while 38 % would choose a Democrat.
In that same scenario, Trump would beat Biden by 4 percentage points, although it is clear from the poll that most Americans would prefer different candidates in both cases.
USA Today data also indicate that Americans broadly support (61 % vs. 32 %) the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill passed by Congress on Friday.
However, Biden’s full Build Back Better package does not have the same popular support, according to the poll. While 47 % approve of Biden’s flagship plan and 44 % reject it, 30 % of Americans believe the provisions of that bill would hurt their families more than help them, while 31 % believe the plan would not have a major effect on their lives.
But people’s discontent does not only affect the executive branch. An overwhelming 75 % of respondents disapprove of Congress’ overall performance, while just 12 % think they have done a good job.
Americans rate congressional Democrats with only 29 % favorably, while Republicans collect a 35 % approval rating.
The USA Today poll reveals the effort Democrats will have to make to maintain a majority in the 2022 elections, which will not only determine control of Congress but also shape the second two years of Biden’s term.
The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters between Nov. 3 and Nov. 5 and has a margin of error of 3.1 %.
