Giorgia Meloni, who is preparing the formation of a government after her election victory, today described as “surreal” that the Italian press invented her statements and called for an end to “the mystification” that distort her message, while the head of the acting Executive, Mario Draghi, denied that he has acted as guarantor of the Prime Minister with Brussels, Paris, and Berlin.

Meloni, who hadn’t made any further statements since she appeared in the early hours of Monday morning to comment on her triumph, broke her silence last night with a response to the congratulations of the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and today published this new message.

“I find it quite surreal that certain press invents my quotation marks, publishing completely arbitrary reconstructions. Let them rest assured: the united center-right has won the elections and is ready to govern. Enough of mystifications,” she tweeted.

The tweet includes a photo in which she appears with her coalition partners, Matteo Salvini (League) and Silvio Berlusconi (Forza Italia), along with some of the headlines that have appeared in the press these days, such as “Meloni won’t budge on Salvini: ‘I don’t want him. He is a pro-Russian’” or “Meloni’s veto on Salvini: ‘Matteo will not have key ministries.’”

“Enough lies, the center-right is ready to govern,” reads the photo accompanying the tweet.

The Italian press tends to publish quotation marks referring to alleged statements, but which have never occurred.

In addition, the head of the acting government, Mario Draghi, today denied an article published by the Repubblica newspaper in which it is stated that “the Prime Minister plays the guarantor (of Meloni) with Brussels, Paris, and Berlin. The three conditions: support Ukraine, loyalty to NATO and not to explode the debt.”

The Government “denies the thesis and the content of the article,” entitled “Kyiv and public accounts, Draghi’s contacts with the EU – ‘Meloni will keep the pacts’”, by assuring that the president of the Executive “has not made any pact nor has he committed himself to guarantee anything.”

“The prime minister maintains regular contacts with international interlocutors to discuss the main dossiers on the agenda and remains committed to allowing an orderly transition within the framework of correct institutional relations,” Draghi added.

Meloni is working for the formation of an Executive, while waiting until October 13 for the Chambers to be formed and then, after a round of consultations, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to instruct Meloni, as the winner of the elections, to form a Government and present him with the list of ministers.
