German Chancellor Angela Merkel, has said that she believes the decision by Twitter and other social media giants to censor President Donald Trump is “problematic,” arguing that private companies should only intervene in rare circumstances.

At a press conference on Monday, Merkel’s spokesperson Steffen Seibert said that “the total closure of the account of an elected president based on the decision of corporate management is problematic,” referring to the suspension of Trump’s profiles on various social networks.

He pointed out that free speech is “a fundamental right of essential importance” that should only be intefered with under the framework of legislation and not by “the corporate management of social networking platforms”.

“Under this rationale, the chancellor sees the permanent closure of the accounts of the U.S. president as problematic,” he added.
