A group of over 400 intellectuals have signed an open letter calling on Mexicans to go out and vote on June 6 against Morena, the party of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), to “defend democracy and freedom.”

The “Manifesto for the Republic, Democracy, and Freedom” is signed by people such as Enrique Krauze, writer Héctor Aguilar Camín, businessman Claudio X. González, sociologist Roger Bartra and poet Gabriel Zaid.

Path for autocracy?

In addition to these people, 430 intellectuals and business people signed the petition. They assure that “it is necessary to defeat the ruling coalition of Morena and its satellite parties at the ballot box in order to rectify the course.”

The intellectuals explained that, in their opinion, the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador intends the “establishment of an autocracy,” for which they asked to stop it through the vote of the citizens at the ballot box to respect pluralism as a way to transform Mexico.

The publication of the letter comes 6 days before the elections, where 500 members of the Chamber of Deputies will be elected at federal level, 15 governorships and more than a thousand deputies at local level, among other positions.
