The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) announced on Wednesday that this year its Oslo Freedom Forum would not be held in the Norwegian capital but in Miami and will host a special program dedicated to the struggle for human rights and democracy in Latin America.
The forum will be held in person on October 4 and 5 at the New World Center under the theme “Thruth Ignited,” HRF said in a statement. The names of the Latin American speakers have not yet been disclosed.
It is only known that Iraqi political cartoonist Ahmed Albasheer, Amnesty International Secretary General Agnès Callamard, Burmese activist Wai Hnin Pwint Thon, psychiatrist and co-founder of Humanity Crew Essam Daod, Eritrean activist Filmon Debru and Uyghur activist Akida Oukat, a Muslim minority in China, will speak.
HRF said the forum will highlight stories that activate action in the service of truth around the world. “We know that as long as there is one person willing to speak out, there is hope that truth will prevail,” the statement said.
The Montreal, Canada-based human rights organization aims to amplify the voices of those who speak truth to power, awaken movements for justice and challenge authoritarian regimes.
The Miami forum will include colloquia and lectures by activists, academic experts and politicians from around the world including Belarus, Cuba, Burma, Eritrea, Iraq, the Yugur region and Venezuela, as well as art installations and live musical performances.
The Oslo Freedom Forum, first held in 2009, is an HRF program made possible with the support of sponsors such as the Sergey Brin Family Foundation, the John Templeton Foundation, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Twitter, the Oslo City Hall, Kavli Trust, Unlikely Collaborators and Amazon.
