Democrats and Republicans have agreed that the Biden administration should not pursue the creation of a “Disinformation Governance Board,” dubbed by some as the “Ministry of Truth.” Both parties stressed that the board’s mission and constitutionality are unclear.

Peter Meijer, R-Michigan, said the purpose of the bill has yet to be explained, though he insisted it does not seem like a good idea. “I still have yet to be explained what this thing is” he said on Fox News.

He further added, “Meanwhile, on the southern border, we have a very clear and dramatic problem that needs to be solved.”

Democratic Rep. Jim Himes also explained to Fox News that he views with suspicion the government’s decision to handle the information that is released because it is not their role to define what is disinformation. “From a position of deep skepticism whenever any government gets involved in managing information, identifying disinformation. As far as I’m concerned, the government has no business saying that this is disinformation and this is information,” he said.

The creation of the Ministry of Truth

Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, reported two weeks ago on the creation of a “Disinformation Governance Board”. The measure, according to various media outlets such as Fox News, would be to prevent what the government considers disinformation during the 2022 elections.

The team, as explained in an article in El American, will be made up of the Department of Homeland Security’s undersecretary for policy, Rob Silvers, and senior advisor Jennifer Gaskill. Following the announcement, Nina Jankowicz, who previously served as part of the disinformation team at the Wilson Center, said she will head the board as executive director.
