Voters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, rejected on Tuesday a proposal to dismantle the local police department, an initiative pushed by the most radical wing of the Democratic Party.

The initiative that sought to dismantle the Police was rejected in a referendum by 56% of the voters.

Different groups opposed the measure claiming that it would negatively impact communities already hit by violence, especially now that homicides in the city are at records not seen since the 1990s.

Two of the most radical progressive Democrats, legislator Ilhan Omar and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, supported the proposal; while other moderate Democrats, such as one of the state’s senators, Amy Klobuchar, rejected it.

This electoral setback in Minnesota comes on top of the defeat of progressives in Virginia, where Republican Glenn Youngkin was proclaimed governor in a clear rejection of left-wing policies.
