MTG Proposes to Defund Special Counsel to Investigate Trump

Leer en Español

Newly re-elected Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (MTG) urged congressional Republicans to impeach Attorney General Merrick Garland and block his use of taxpayer money after he announced the appointment of a special counsel to investigate former President Donald Trump.

MTG requested that the new Republican majority in the House “refuse to appropriate any funding to Merrick Garland’s Special Counsel and defund any part of the DOJ acting on behalf of the Democrat party as a taxpayer funded campaign arm for the Democrat’s 2024 presidential nominee.”

MTG tweeted that the current House GOP leader and likely next Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, could deny funds earmarked for the DOJ special counsel investigating former President Trump.

Greene also suggested that McCarthy could invoke the Holman rule, a procedural measure by which the House can adjust appropriations legislation to reduce pay or lay off government employees. The rule can also be used to cut specific programs.

On the appointment of the special counsel for the Donald Trump investigation based on the events of Jan. 6, 2021, a spokesman for the Trump for 2024 campaign told NBC News said that it is a political stunt by a “politicized and weaponized” Biden Justice Department.
