Charlie Watts, drummer of the British band Rolling Stones, has died at the age of 80, said Bernard Doherty, the musician’s representative, on Tuesday.

The legendary member of the “rolling” had recently undergone an operation, which forced his withdrawal from the group’s upcoming planned tour in the United States.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family,” said a statement released to the media by his spokesperson.

“Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation,” adds the release, which asks to respect the privacy of family and friends at this “difficult time.”

The Rolling Stones are scheduled to resume their U.S. tour in September after being forced to postpone it last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In early August, the band announced that Steve Jordan would be Watts’ temporary replacement on the American tour.
