Two female senators on Thursday called on the Biden Administration to expedite the issuance of work permits and assured that the delays affect hundreds of thousands of Afghan and Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in the country.
Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski and Democrat Amy Klobuchar wrote a letter to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) detailing that they have received information of waits of up to nine months to receive work permits.

In July, the US reported 6.4 million new hires and nearly double the number of job openings, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
According to the Migration Policy Institute, about 79,000 Afghans and 39,000 Ukrainians have entered the United States with a special immigration permit that allows them to apply for a work permit.
