NBC will not broadcast the Golden Globes in 2022 until it reforms its rules, the network said in a statement. The cancellation comes months after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), in charge of delivering the awards, received complaints about an alleged lack of diversity. Companies such as Netflix, Amazon, Warner Bros., and more than 100 other companies announced a boycott against the HFPA.
The HFPA had last week approved a plan to recruit more black members and make other changes over the next year. “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a statement.
Diversity at the Golden Globes
The network added that “assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful that we will be in a position to broadcast the gala in 2023.”
Last week, the HFPA board wrote to its members informing them of several steps to diversify its roster, including hiring a chief diversity officer, placing an emphasis on hiring black journalists and expanding the pool of potential applicants.
However, the efforts were not enough for these groups. The Golden Globes, which at their peak came to compete in viewership with the Oscars, have been awarded since 1944.
