Netflix fired a trans activist who was organizing a strike over Dave Chappelle’s comedy special. According to the company, the decision was made after the worker —whose name remains anonymous— leaked confidential information about the show called The Closer.

The digital platform said she was fired after she was suspected of sharing metrics on the special to the press, including how much Netflix paid Chappelle for the special and its audience reach, The Top Millennial reported.

“We have let go of an employee for sharing confidential, commercially sensitive information outside the company. We understand this employee may have been motivated by disappointment and hurt with Netflix, but maintaining a culture of trust and transparency is core to our company,” Netflix told the media.

In the special program, Chappelle makes jokes about certain positions of the LGBTQ community and other topics such as feminism and cancel culture.

Criticism of Netflix

Meanwhile, a former employee of the company assured The Verge that the decision was made because of a racial issue, despite the fact that comedian Dave Chappelle is also a Black person.

“All these white people are going around talking to the press and speaking publicly on Twitter and the only person who gets fired is the Black person who was quiet all the time. That’s absurd, and it further shows that Black trans are the ones who are being targeted in this conversation,” she said.

In the view of the group of Netflix workers who were planning the strike, Dave Chappell’s Netflix special is transphobic and bigoted.

The Closer is a program produced by the popular American comedian and premiered on Netflix last week. There, Chappelle criticizes the so-called cancel culture.

It was learned that Netflix co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, reportedly pointed out that “Chappelle is one of the most popular stand-up comedians today, and we have a long-standing deal with him.”

According to EFE news agency, Chappelle claims that the trans community has “very thin skin”. In addition, he supports the messages in which writer J.K. Rowling defended her “TERF” position, a term coined to group the feminist movement that excludes transgender people.
