New Hampshire is the freest state in the United States. This was revealed by a study conducted by the Cato Institute in an overall ranking of freedom that combines personal and economic freedoms.

Second on the list is Florida. Both states at the top of the ranking are governed by Republicans. The institute’s website highlighted that the authors of the research, William Ruger and Jason Sorens, took into account many policy variables suggested by readers to define the list.

In tax matters, the lead is held by Florida. Fiscal policy consists of categories of taxes, public workers, spending, debt and decentralization. In that way, the state also stands out as a territory with economic freedom.

The gun control category in the study measures the direct cost of gun laws to gun owners and dealers, in that ranking the lead is held by Kansas, followed by New Hampshire.

“Published by the Cato Institute and accompanied by demographic and economic data on each state, Freedom in the 50 States is an essential reference for anyone interested in state policy and in advancing a better understanding of a free society,” the Cato Institute explained.
