New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the legalization of recreational marijuana use in the state. In this way, New Mexico will join the 15 states and the District of Columbia that have already legalized the use of the drug.
Lujan Grisham described the measure as a breakthrough in the state. California and Colorado were among the first to legalize marijuana in the United States. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill for its legalization last Wednesday. “This legislation is a big step forward for our state,” Grisham said.

She also acknowledged that this measure will change the way citizens think. The use of the drug will be authorized for those over 21 years of age. “Legalized cannabis for adult use is going to change the way we think about New Mexico for the better: our workforce, our economy, our future,” he said.
As Cuomo did last week, the Democrat said that in this way “mistakes of the past are corrected”. Similarly, he noted that a safer industry will be built. “We’re going to increase consumer safety by creating a bona fide industry. And we will break new ground in an industry that may well transform New Mexico’s economic future for the better.”
Despite the decisions of Democratic governors, on several occasions the Republican Party has warned about the consequences of marijuana legalization and that its normalization could hurt Americans. Last year, Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Leader, explained that there are more important issues for citizens.
“This week, your Democratic majority in the House is tackling tough issues by holding a vote on legalizing marijuana and banning tiger ownership. Nothing for small businesses. Nothing for reopening schools. Nothing about fighting the pandemic. Just cannabis and cats.”
McCarthy made these statements last December 4, when the House of Representatives gave the go-ahead for the legalization of marijuana nationwide.
