The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, resigned from office this Tuesday, August 10, after the state attorney general, Letitia James, concluded that Cuomo did sexually harass 11 women and that in view of the discovery the Democratic Party demanded his resignation.

The governor said his resignation will be effective in the next 14 days: “The best way I can help is if I step aside and let the government return to government,” Cuomo said.
He said he also assumes “full responsibility” for his actions and alleged that there have been “generational or cultural changes” that he has failed to understand.
Cuomo, who continues to deny the allegations against him, decided to resign hours after it became known that his top aide, Melissa DeRosa, also resigned from her office stating that the last two years “have been very tyring emotionally.”
Had he not resigned, the governor would have faced impeachment in the state Assembly, where a majority of lawmakers were ready to remove him from office. In addition, U.S. President Joe Biden himself called for his resignation.
Cuomo’s political fall came after a 168-page report issued by the state attorney general, following a five-month independent investigation, concluded that the governor groped, kissed or made suggestive comments to women, including comments to female employees and former female government workers. It also alleges retaliation against at least one woman who accused him of sexual misconduct.
The New York governorship will now be in the hands of Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who showed support for Cuomo’s victims:
“Sexual harassment is unacceptable in any workplace, and certainly not in public service. The AG’s investigation has documented repulsive & unlawful behavior by the Governor towards multiple women. I believe these brave women & admire their courage coming forward.,” he said on Twitter on Aug. 3.
“No one is above the law. Under the New York Constitution, the Assembly will now determine the next steps. Because Lieutenant Governors stand next in the line of succession, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the process at this moment,” she said.
