Republicans stepped up their criticism of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, calling for impeachment over the state’s mismanagement of nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay, a Republican, called on Democrats to back a Republican plan to create an impeachment commission that would “gather facts and evidence” about the Cuomo Administration’s withholding of data related to the deaths of thousands of seniors in the state’s nursing homes.

“The Cuomo Administration’s cover-up of nursing home deaths is one of the most alarming scandals we’ve seen in state government,” Barclay told Fox News.

He added: “Intentionally withholding critical information from the public, underreporting fatality numbers by 50 percent and the recent revelation they hid the truth to avoid a federal Department of Justice investigation are among the factors that raise the serious possibility of criminality”

The bipartisan committee, he explained, would be composed by four Republicans and four Democrats, with two appointees from each legislative leader, and it would have the ability to subpoena witnesses and compel the creation of records, correspondence and other relevant documents.

The committee would be tasked with “examining the state’s method of administration and conduct in all matters relating to nursing homes and long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

It would have 60 days to complete its work and then submit the report to the state legislature.

“And if there’s anything in there, the Assembly can request articles of impeachment. All it needs is a majority vote to do that. And then it would go to the Senate for a trial where they would need a two-thirds vote,” Barclay said.
