The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, ruled out this Monday new restrictions and border closures due to the detection in South Africa of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus and stressed that “there is no evidence” that the vaccines are less effective.

“No, we don’t have that prognosis. We think that we have advanced a lot in vaccination and that we continue advancing and we are going to intensify the whole vaccination program,” he answered to a specific question during his morning press conference in the southern state of Oaxaca.

López Obrador explained that the Ministry of Health will give more details on Tuesday, but advanced that there is no “solid information on whether this variant is more dangerous than the other variants.”

“[I want] to tell Mexicans that we are carrying out a follow-up, that there are no elements to worry about, there are no risk reasons, according to the reports that specialists have given me,” he said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared last Friday the Omicron variant as “a risk variant” and several countries have applied travel restrictions for people coming from some African countries.

Mexico, which has 294,000 confirmed COVID-19 deaths and 3.9 million infections, has not implemented mandatory closures or closed its borders during the entire pandemic.

The country has accumulated 17 weeks of declining infections, and therefore considers the third wave of the pandemic to be over.

Of its 126 million inhabitants, 76.6 million people over 18 years of age have at least one dose of the vaccine and 64.92 million have completed the vaccination schedule.
