The UN Human Rights Committee turned against the United States in a request to Cape Verde to suspend the extradition of Maduro’s frontman, Alex Saab, who is being investigated in U.S. territory for links to drug trafficking and alleged money laundering crimes.

In a two-page letter, the Human Rights Committee pronounced itself on the case of Saab, who is pointed out by the U.S. authorities of being a frontman for Nicolás Maduro. Since 2019, the Department of Justice filed an indictment against him for allegedly laundering millions of dollars and, since 2017, journalistic investigations associate him with multimillionaire contracts of Chavismo.

The Committee has in its hands only the version of the defense and asked Cape Verde to suspend the extradition to the United States while it examines the case.

“The State party has also been requested to take all necessary measures to ensure access to adequate medical care, preferably by independent and specialized doctors,” the missive says.

Saab’s defense has insisted that his arrest in the African nation of Cape Verde was arbitrary and even illegal because he was on an alleged diplomatic mission to Iran at the time.

While US justice awaits extradition, Saab is living in luxury in an exclusive area of Cape Verde.

Maduro’s front man is under investigation in the United States and Europe for being a key player in illicit businesses linked to terrorism, drug trafficking, the illicit sale of gold and the import of overpriced subsidized food.

For Alex Saab’s surrender to the United States to become effective, it is necessary that two of the three judges that make up the Constitutional Court of Cape Verde ratify it.

According to the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo “the Constitutional Court should have already decided whether to release him or to hand him over to the DEA so that he can be prosecuted in the United States for a mega operation of money laundering of more than US$ 350 million.”
