There will be no federal mandate for vaccine passports. This was stated by the White House, in a meeting of its spokeswoman Jen Psaki with the press. Psaki’s statements come in the midst of the rejection of several governors to the implementation of the mandatory use of the document in the U.S. territory.
The Biden-Harris administration has been evaluating the measure for months. In fact, they met with companies to determine how the passport, which would certify that a citizen had been vaccinated against COVID-19, would be prepared.
However, since last week, Republican governors, such as Ron DeSantis of Florida, have rejected making the vaccine passport mandatory in their states, considering that it violates individual freedom.
“We always said we wanted to provide the vaccine for everyone, but not force it on anyone,” DeSantis said last week at a press conference.
Texas also banned the vaccine passport
Meanwhile, Texas also joined Florida and its governor, Greg Abbott, informed this Tuesday that the vaccine passport will not be mandatory in the state. In addition, he emphasized that the vaccination day has reduced the number of cases and hospitalizations; and with this, he said, normality has been returning.
Likewise, Abbott emphasized that he does not agree with the passport because it is a way of taking away the freedom and privacy of the people. He agreed with DeSantis that it is necessary for people to be vaccinated, but on a voluntary basis.
“Texans shouldn’t be required to show proof of vaccination & reveal private health information just to go about their daily lives,” the governor wrote on Twitter.
